History

No evidence exists that House No.4 in the Rotušės Square, where the restaurant SADUTĖ is located, is the oldest building in the Old Town. However, all the historians we have talked to agree that that this building is one of the oldest buildings in Kaunas. Gothic and Renaissance style walls and arches take us back to the 16th century. At some time in the past the Duke A.Masalskis, Bernardine monks, a famous burgomaster J.Vileišis lived in this house. There have survived some data proving that an inn had functioned here. During the Soviet times, SADUTĖ was a shop for the people who were going to get married, thus those, who still recall the Soviet times, first of all associate this name with this shop. As so many rich historical facts have survived till our days, we decided to preserve the old name for our restaurant. Moreover, we have managed to preserve the plate with the name SADUTĖ on it. This unique plate was made by V.Streigys and was listed in the Register of our cultural heritage. By the way, the word “Sadutė“ means „a Lithuanian wedding evening folk dance of young girls“.
